We founded this think tank and retreat because we believe that creative ideas and rejuvenation are best found at the intersections of disciplines. When people with widely different experiences and views on recruiting, development, and learning come together, exciting things will happen.
Most conferences invite people from vertical slices of a profession and therefore offer a narrow view. While this may be an excellent way to learn new skills or to hone existing ones, it usually does not generate new thinking or push the edge of a discipline.
We decided to seek out the edges by looking at talent from a variety of perspectives - that of e-learning, recruiting, succession planning, retention, marketing, and other areas that frame our existence and shape our experiences.
We also wanted to make this retreat a place where networks could grow and where people could slow down a bit and talk a nature walk, go kayaking, or just sit and watch the waves. So, we built an outdoor component into every retreat and spend a few hours do something that stimulates the body, not just the mind.
This first retreat was a experiment that has grown into an annual event and a think tank that does ongoing research into issues around talent - people and how they work, learn, play and engage with others.
