Self-Connecting Collaborative Systems

For decades organizations and individuals have tried to build and be part of teams with mixed success. Hierarchy, isolation and poor communication, individual goals and reward systems have made collaboration difficult. We are now embracing transparency, changing conventional ideas about privacy. leveraging technology to connect people anywhere, anytime and making it easier for everyone to share and contribute. There is less hierarchy and people are more able to reach out to anyone who can contribute ideas or skills.

Formal organizational structures are giving way to spontaneous self-organizing groups that work without formal structure, hierarchy, or rules. Clay Shirkeyoffers some insights on this TED talk he gave over 5 years ago!

We are exploring  what this trend means for formally organized institutions and groups. Is there a way that formal organizations can take advantage of the creativity and flexibility of self-organized entities? How can current and future workers be part of one or both of these?
